Event details

It is important to note that the WWF Desert Challenge will be physically challenging and participants need to be fit and in good health to complete the trip. As a fitness guide, participants should be able to run a half marathon in under two and a half hours, be comfortable on a mountain bike at the level of gravel roads, be able to paddle a kayak and willing to abseil with assistance from professionals. A brief outline of the daily activities follows.

Saturday 13th October: A 40km cycle on gravel roads from Sendlingsdrift into the wilderness of the Richtersveld. The ride includes a steep climb and decent over Hellskloof Pass gaining 600m to a maximum altitude of 1400m. The riding is technical in places. Overnight at Hakkiesdoring camp.
Sunday 14th October: A 10km hike through deep canyons up to Gods Window (900m climb). Abseil 120m down a slot canyon into a spectacular amphitheatre. Overnight in the amphitheatre. Will need to carry all supplies for this night.
Monday 15th October: A 10km hike out of the amphitheatre back to Hakkiesdoring camp to relax for the afternoon.
Tuesday 16th October: An early start with a 15km moderate cycle across sandy plains to the Tatasberg Mountain. Climb over and under giant boulders to the peak (the highest point in the Richtersveld) to see spectacular views. Pick up bikes on the other side of the mountain and then a fast cycle down Pyp Kloof (1000m drop) to the Orange River.
Wednesday 17th October: A 15km paddle down the Orange River over moderate rapids in either solo or 2-up Fluid Synergy kayaks. Overnight at de Hoop campsite on the river.
Thursday 18th October: A 45km cycle picking your own line over varied terrain back to Sendlingsdrift.
Friday 19th October: Depart from Sendlingsdrift by Pilatus PC-12 for Cape Town, flying low over the Richtersveld to look down on the WWF Desert Challenge route just achieved.
